A federal judge ruled Friday that the insurance carrier for NASCAR driver Tony Stewart does not have to defend or indemnify him in a lawsuit brought by the family of a driver who died after being struck by Stewart's car during a race. U.S. District Court Judge David Hurd ruled that Axis Insurance Co.'s policy with Stewart ''unambiguously limited'' the insurer's liability to specific races. The family of Kevin Ward Jr. is suing Stewart, claiming that he acted recklessly when he struck and killed the young driver in an open-wheel race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in August 2014.

The Daytona 500 is moving back to its traditional weekend in 2018. The Daytona 500 had been held on Presidents Day weekend from 1968 to 2011. At the time, the NFL was talking about expanding to an 18-game regular-season schedule and/or adding an extra bye week that could have ended up putting America's biggest sporting event - the Super Bowl - on the same weekend as NASCAR's season opener.

NASCAR's most popular driver is scheduled to miss his third consecutive race this Sunday with concussion-like symptoms. Kyle Busch used his first Brickyard 400 victory as a springboard to his first Sprint Cup title. Smoke is heating up just in time for his final trip to the Brickyard. Tony Stewart's final NASCAR season - no, he's not retiring from racing - has gone from bust to boon in a matter of weeks and he's now all but assured of racing for a fourth career Sprint Cup championship in the fall. Jury: NASCAR, racetrack didn't cause harm in lightning death (The Associated Press)

A jury has ruled that a Pennsylvania racetrack didn't cause harm to a man killed by lightning minutes after an August 2012 NASCAR race was stopped. The Pocono Record reports (http://bit.ly/29Qt3oo ) the jury ruled in favor of Pocono Raceway and NASCAR on Monday, finding the racetrack negligent, but not a ''factual cause'' of any harm to Brian Zimmerman. The suit says the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning at 4:12 p.m. The race was stopped at 4:54 p.m. and Zimmerman was killed about five minutes later.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. candidly declared two weeks ago that he has too good of a race team to be worried about making NASCAR's playoffs. Since then, he has produced underwhelming finishes at Daytona and Kentucky and slipped to 13th in the Sprint Cup standings. Earnhardt hasn't scored a top-10 finish in a month and, yes, he is indeed in danger of missing the championship Chase.

Firefighters have extinguished a fire that broke out in the parking lot behind the grandstand at Kentucky Speedway and sent thick, black smoke billowing into the sky. Track spokesman Tim Bray said firefighters at the facility and from Gallatin County put out the blaze in the speedway's Platinum lot. Bray said the fire began in the passenger compartment of a truck and damaged a second vehicle, with a third singed.

Kyle Busch led 185 laps and caught a huge break before surviving a final restart to win Friday night's 300-mile NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Kentucky Speedway. The defending Sprint Cup Series champion needed overtime to win in his No. 18 Toyota, with the race going one circuit past its scheduled 200 laps after a late caution. Busch then outdueled Daniel Suarez and Austin Dillon in a three-wide restart to earn his first series win at Kentucky since 2004.

Brad Keselowski has finally won at Daytona International Speedway, a track that had eluded him despite strong success in restrictor plate races. Keselowski has four career victories at Talladega Superspeedway, including a win there in May. But he could never pull it off at Daytona, at least not until Saturday night's dominating run. ''I've doubted myself here,'' said Keselowski, who had just three top-10 finishes in 14 previous starts at Daytona.

Almirola edges Allgaier to win Xfinity race at Daytona (The Associated Press)

Aric Almirola was declared the winner of Friday night's Xfinity Series race when NASCAR determined he was the leader when the caution flag froze the field shortly before the finish line at Daytona International Speedway. A four-car pack led by Almirola and Justin Allgaier hurtled toward the finish, but NASCAR had to freeze the field because of the accident that happened behind them. The cars were brought down pit road as NASCAR reviewed the running order, and Almirola was given the win.

Greg Biffle used a last-gasp push to steal the pole for Saturday night's race at Daytona International Speedway. Biffle was the last car to make a lap in Friday night's qualifying session and earned the top starting spot with a speed of 192.995 mph in his Roush Fenway Racing Ford. It is Biffle's first pole since 2012.
